Uncle Henry’s Closet was formed in February of 2009 in memory of Henry Grady Vickery. Uncle Henry passed after a year long bout with melanoma. He was an extremely generous man who was always more than willing to lend a helping hand. After his passing, I wanted to make sure his generosity lived on. I decided to put together a non-profit organization that would raise funds for a variety of different charities. Uncle Henry was a very independent man. Even at the fine age of 88, he insisted on doing everything for himself, so in his final days, when he was unable to get around in the ways he was used to, Hospice came to our home and helped out in many ways. Not only did they make his last days comfortable, but they also assisted the family in grieving, which everyone who has lost a loved one knows is an extremely important process.

Needless to say, the first name on my list of organizations to help out was Hospice. That’s when Handbags for Hospice was born. The event was held at the City Arts Factory in Downtown Orlando. Over 40 of the area’s most talented artists came together and designed wooden purses that were auctioned off with all proceeds going to Hospice of the Comforter. The be nefit, which also featured live music by Junkie Rush, Shak Nasti, and DJ Nigel, was a wonderful success. In fact, I have since been contacted by so many of the artists who enjoyed designing the bags, along with so many others that wanted to take part, that I decided to keep it going through Helped by Handbags.
